Searching for Purpose in a Decaying Landscape
The “American Dream” has Collapsed — Now What?
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the “American Dream” is defined by “a happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the U.S. especially by working hard and becoming successful.”
When I hear this phrase, I think this must have been what the 1950’s felt like.
All hamburgers, rock and roll, and a bright future for those willing to put in hard work.
There were promises put in place, if you do well in school, get a good job, build a family, you’re guaranteed to live out a long, fulfilling life with a home, and a yard, a white picket fence, a retirement fund, and care for your decrepit ass once you get too old to work.
Unforunately, as most of us are well aware, that dream has been long dead.
Where We’re At Now
We now live in a world of 15 minute cities, less trust in our government than ever before, a very confused up and coming generation, and those of us who would usually be a decade or two away from retirement wondering what the hell we’re going to do when that time comes.
